Join the Nillumbik Trail on Sustainable House Day
Would you open your home to the public to help others achieve what you have ?
Clean Energy Nillumbik are joining forces with Renew, Nillumbik Shire Council, and local home owners to help Nillumbik residents with homes that are great to live in.
You’ve put some thought and effort into your house and now you’re really reaping the benefits of a home that’s more comfortable and costs less to run. It would be great to open your house to share some of the things you’ve learnt along the way.
We need more homes to participate and we'll help you on the journey.
Homes need just 4 sustainable features such as:
passive solar design
energy efficient appliances
home food production (vegies, chooks)
There's lots more information at
Still not sure? Here are some common reservations:
But it’s not finished yet
Don’t let that stop you. It doesn’t need to be finished. It’s helpful to see work in progress and most people’s homes have projects underway. Visitors can feel a bit daunted if everything is picture perfect.
What about security?
There are a number of strategies in place to help with this. You can restrict visitor access to sections of your home. Renew has materials to show visitors where they can and can’t go and of course you would pack away items of value. You can manage visitors access to your home by running tours at set times. The registration process also helps to manage visitors, and volunteers can help supervise.
What preparation do I need to do?
There are two aspects to the preparation: 1) Register your home on the Sustainable House Day website and put some thought into the description. 2) Make your home safe and tidy.
I’ll need help on the day
Renew and Clean Energy Nillumbik will help you source volunteers to assist on the day with registrations, information and keeping you fed.
